The state of Coronavirus (Covid19) - Brussels-Capital Region

It is understandable that citizens are asking themselves questions about the current situation after the spring break.

Belgium is currently in phase 2, which at this stage means that in the whole country there are a few known cases of people with symptoms.This phase does not restrict freedom of movement, but it does require us to remain vigilant in the event that symptoms occur.

The precautions taken by medical services are aimed at:

• people who have been in a risk area and are showing symptoms;
• people who have been in contact with a confirmed case.

Following yesterday’s Interministerial Public Health Conference (1 March) and the consultation committee convened by the Prime Minister this morning, an extraordinary Regional Security Council (“CORES”) was convened today to review the situation. This Council brings together the mayors of the 19 Brussels municipalities and the heads of the police forces on the initiative of the Minister-President and the Senior Official. In view of the agenda, the Minister-President also invited the Minister of Health of the Common Community Commission and the State Secretary for the Fire and Emergency Medical Care Service.
Given the reality of the Brussels Region and the high mobility of citizens in the 19 municipalities and beyond, this CORES was necessary to ensure coherence in order to support the medical sector and the federal health authorities. The aim is to ensure coordinated communication between all competent authorities and with citizens.

All the authorities present want to focus on safeguarding the health of citizens and, more specifically, those most susceptible to severe symptoms (the elderly and chronically ill).

On this occasion, it was agreed to:

• identify the occurrences and the number of people affected (via the local emergency response planners and the police districts);
• revise the Business Continuity Plans (BCPs) in the area;
• organise prior consultation depending on the evolution of the situation before taking measures at local/regional level, in close cooperation with the federal government;
• organise CORES meetings if the situation so requires.
• Medical services such as the Sint-Pieters CMU in Brussels, one of the two reference hospitals in Belgium, remain mobilised and are ready to treat any suspicious case.
• Communication from the health authorities is updated as the situation evolves.
